Advocacy comes in different forms. Depending on the attorney, each has their own style. My clients are strong, smart, and ambitious. They come to me to brainstorm solutions and find the best approach to fight their legal issue. I listen, I do not wait for my turn to talk. Together, we agree on an approach and move on to the next step. Talking about a legal issue can be difficult for everyone. There are many ways to raise the subject and start the conversation before and after the legal issue happens. So..... what does advocacy look like? Advocacy is not wearing a cape and being a savior. Advocacy is making one feel heard, seen, and appreciated. It means walking with your client in what could be their darkest or scariest moment and saying "hey, you are not alone. Let's do this together."
A lawyer (also called attorney, counsel, or counselor) is a licensed professional who advises and represents others in legal matters. A lawyer has two main duties: to uphold the law while also protecting a client’s rights. To carry out these duties, a lawyer should understand the law and be an effective communicator. To understand how laws and the legal system work, lawyers must go through special schooling. Each state has enacted standards that must be met before a person is licensed to practice law there.
